{"id":41,"date":"2017-05-17T22:33:50","date_gmt":"2017-05-17T22:33:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/prairiemoon.mivamerchant.net\/blog\/?page_id=41"},"modified":"2019-06-18T07:34:37","modified_gmt":"2019-06-18T13:34:37","slug":"site-preparation","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/old.prairiemoon.com\/blog\/site-preparation","title":{"rendered":"Establishing a Native Seed Mix"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Starting a native plant community, whether it be prairie\/meadow, woodland, or wetland, from seed, involves a labor of love and patience.\u00a0 Most who have been through it will praise the process, the thrill of discovery and the absolute joy in transforming a space with little biological activity into a healthy eco-system.\u00a0 You will delight in your efforts season after season as the wildlife and color reminiscent of the North American prairie become a part of your home landscape.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline;\">YEAR 1<\/span>:\u00a0 SITE PREPARATION AND SEEDING YEAR<br \/>\nMany areas will need 1 growing season (spring-fall) for site preparation, an exception may be an area with lawn grass, recent agricultural or garden plot, or new construction area.\u00a0 Remove existing grass\/weeds and the weed seed bank that may be in the soil during the growing season (April-September) by smothering, repeated shallow tiling, using herbicides or other methods you determine to be best.<\/p>\n<p>Choose a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prairiemoon.com\/seed-mixes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>native seed mix<\/strong><\/a> that matches your sun and soil conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Sowing the seed: Broadcast seed on bare (weed-free), compact ground (do not till prior to sowing).\u00a0 \u00a0We are an advocate for fall or frost plantings (mid-Oct to early-March).\u00a0 \u00a0Spring plantings (April-June) are an acceptable second choice.\u00a0 You should not plant in the summer.\u00a0 (Click here for <a href=\"\/pros-and-cons-to-fall-vs-spring-seeding.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pros and Cons to Fall vs. Spring Plantings<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline;\">YEAR 2<\/span>: FIRST GROWING SEASON<br \/>\nMost sites need maintenance mowings to keep weeds from going to seed and to allow light to penetrate the ground encouraging growth of the majority of the slow-growing natives.\u00a0 You may get some blooms this year, most likely annuals like Black-eyed Susan or Partridge Pea, but you must sacrifice these native flowers if you want the other species to establish. Keep the area cut to 4-6&#8243; this year.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t pull the weeds!\u00a0 This will disturb the root systems of the nearby natives trying to establish.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;
